Hi friends, today I want to tell you about my favorite summer makeup product: balm stains. They're actually my favorite lip products period, not just in the summer, but they do have the very summery qualities of being low maintenance, effortless, and fresh.
Balm Stains are like tinted chapsticks that come in a large twist up crayon and impart a beautiful sheer but buildable wash of color without being overly glossy. They were (I think?) made popular a couple years ago by Clinique's Chubby Sticks (I'm not going to lie to you guys, their absurdly fallic title makes me giggle because inside, I'm a 12 year old boy that just really likes makeup.)
Since then lots of brands have jumped on the bandwagon with their own versions. I tried many of them, and narrowed it down to my favorite drugstore options for you: The Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain & The Rimmel Colour Rush Balm. The Revlon Balm is available pretty much everywhere and runs about $6.50, the Rimmel is $5 and I've only seen it at Walmart, the original Chubby Stick is at Sephora and costs $17, and all of their formulas are nearly identical. However, my two recommendations have drastically different smells. The Revlon has a minty smell and the Rimmel is vanilla. All the shades are gorgeous from both, so it's up to you which scent you prefer.
I took the liberty of photographing my favorite every day summer shades for you (and a photo of my product-free lips for comparison)
When it comes to my own style, I'm a natural, effortless, wear a fanny pack and moo moo to the dog park type of woman (I'm probably joking) so my favorite shades tend to be of the my-lips-but-better variety. However, there are a ton of gorgeouuusssss shades to choose from so go ahead and play around at the store with more dramatic colors for dates/parties/consulate galas/etc (hey I don't know what you do with your time, maybe you're really fancy.) Balms are perfect for those scared of lipstick that want to be more adventurous or those that just want a very effortless look because even the dark shades are sheer.
I love products that multitask almost as much as I love this picture of a turtle eating a strawberry and one of the reasons these big fat crayons make the perfect summer product is that they double as a gorgeous cheek tint! I just swipe a bit on my lips and cheeks and give it a quick blend with my finger, beautiful. If you have pigmentation or acne that you're trying to cover on your cheek area, use a powder blush instead, as swiping and blending this on your cheeks might sheer the foundation in the area. Also if you're very break out prone it's probably best to stick to powder products for cheeks, but go nuts with these on your mouth part of your face!
In my opinion, these yummy crayons are the ultimate perfect lip product.
They give color and complete a look, but they're just so darned effortless! They have gorgeous color selections from subtle to modern dramatic, do a wonderful job of moisturizing the lips, and replace at least three products in your makeup bag.
To sum up, I think balm stains are just fabulous and also that moo moos are going to make a comeback.
